What & Why

R.I.C.E. is an acronym for a four-step first-aid process for acute soft tissue injuries like sprains and strains. It stands for:RestIceCompressionElevationThe goal of R.I.C.E. is to manage pain and reduce swelling in the first 24-48 hours after an injury. This helps kickstart the healing process. Remember, this is first aid, not a cure. For severe pain, obvious deformity, or if you can't put weight on a limb, you must see a doctor.

Example 1 — Ankle Sprain

Maya is playing soccer and rolls her ankle going for the ball. She feels a sharp pain and has to limp off the field.Rest: Her coach immediately tells her to stop playing and sit on the bench. She doesn't try to 'walk it off'.Ice: The team trainer grabs an ice pack, wraps it in a thin towel, and places it on Maya's swelling ankle for 15 minutes.Compression: After icing, the trainer wraps her ankle with an elastic compression bandage. It's snug for support but not so tight that her toes feel numb.Elevation: While she sits on the bench, Maya props her foot up on a stack of equipment bags to raise it above the level of her heart.

Example 2 — Wrist Strain

Leo is in the school gym and feels a tweak in his wrist while doing push-ups. It feels sore and weak.Rest: He immediately stops his workout to avoid making the strain worse.Ice: He goes to the school nurse, who gives him a cold pack. He wraps it in a paper towel and applies it to the sore part of his wrist for about 20 minutes.Compression: He uses a simple wrist support band from the first-aid kit to provide gentle compression.Elevation: During his next class, he rests his arm on his desk, keeping his wrist propped up on a textbook.
