Forming the Present Subjunctive
1. Start with the 'yo' form of the present indicative. 2. Drop the '-o'. 3. Add the opposite ending (-ar verbs get -e endings; -er/-ir verbs get -a endings).
This three-step process is used to conjugate most verbs into the present subjunctive. This form is required in a subordinate clause after a WEIRDO trigger and a change of subject. Example: hablar -> yo hablo -> habl- -> hable, hables, hable, hablemos, hablen.
Forming Formal Commands
For both affirmative and negative commands, use the 'usted' or 'ustedes' form of the present subjunctive.
When you need to give a polite or respectful instruction, use the subjunctive form. Example: (comer) -> coma (usted), coman (ustedes). Negative: No coma,...
