In the preterite tense, the original stems of these verbs are completely replaced by these new irregular 'u-stems'. You must memorize these three stems.
The Irregular Preterite Endings Formula
Raíz Irregular + {-e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron}
Once you have the irregular stem (e.g., 'tuv-'), you add one of these special endings depending on the subject. These endings are the same for all 'u-stem' verbs and many other irregular preterite verbs. Crucially, they never carry written accents.
