The Storytelling Framework
Imperfecto for the background; Pretérito for the plot.
Use the imperfecto to set the scene: describe the weather, the time, what people were wearing, how they were feeling, or what was generally happening. Use the pretérito to narrate the sequence of main events that move the story forward.
The Interruption Pattern
Ongoing Action (Imperfecto) + 'cuando' + Interrupting Action (Pretérito).
This is a classic structure. The imperfecto describes what 'was happening' over a period of time. The pretérito describes the specific, sudden action that interrupted it.
