The Addition Sentence Rule (Part) + (Part) = (Whole) An addition sentence has two parts that you add together to make a whole, or total. The Plus Sign's Job + means 'and' Use the plus sign to connect the two groups you are putting together. The Equals Sign's Job = means 'is the same as' Use the equals sign right before you write the total number, or sum.
