Core Formulas
Converting Percent to Decimal
To convert a percent to a decimal, divide the percent by 100 (or move the decimal point two places to the left).
This rule is essential because most percent calculations require the percent to be in decimal form before multiplying or dividing. For example, $P\% = \frac{P}{100}$.
Calculating a Percent of a Number (Finding the Part)
To find a percent of a number, convert the percent to a decimal (or fraction) and multiply it by the whole number. $\text{Part} = \text{Percent (as decimal)} \times \text{Whole}$
This is used when you know the total amount and the percentage, and you want to find out what that percentage represents as a specific value. For example, finding 15% of $200.
