Introduction & Learning Objectives
Learning Objectives
Identify and describe the key components of a bar graph (title, axes, labels, scale, bars).
Accurately read and extract specific data values from a bar graph.
Compare and contrast data presented in different categories of a bar graph.
Perform basic calculations (sum, difference, percentage) using data extracted from bar graphs.
Analyze trends or patterns within a bar graph's data.
Draw valid conclusions and answer questions based on the information presented in a bar graph.
Ever wonder how companies show their sales, or how schools display student preferences for clubs? 📊 It's often with a bar graph!
In this lesson, you'll learn how to read, understand, and extract meaningful information from bar graphs. Mastering this skill is crucial fo...

TermDefinitionExample
Bar GraphA visual display of data using rectangular bars of different heights or lengths, where each bar represents a category and its height/length corresponds to a specific value or frequency.A graph showing the number of students who prefer apples, bananas, or oranges, with separate bars for each fruit.
Axis (X-axis and Y-axis)The two perpendicular lines that form the framework of a graph. The X-axis (horizontal) typically represents categories, and the Y-axis (vertical) typically represents the values or frequencies. In a graph of 'Favorite Sports', the X-axis might list 'Soccer', 'Basketball', 'Tennis', and the Y-axis might show 'Number of Students'.
ScaleThe set of markings along an axis that indicates the units...

Core Formulas
Reading a Specific Value
To find the value for a specific category, locate the category on the X-axis, then follow its bar up (or across) to the Y-axis (or X-axis for horizontal bars) and read the corresponding value on the scale.
This is the fundamental step for extracting individual data points from the graph. Always pay attention to the scale increments.
Calculating the Difference Between Categories
To find the difference between two categories, subtract the smaller value from the larger value: $\text{Difference} = \text{Value}_1 - \text{Value}_2$
Use this rule when you need to compare how much more or less one category has compared to another. Ensure you read both values accurately first.
Calculating the Total for Selected Categories
To find the total for selected...

B.Approximately 95.8%
C.85.0%
D.1150%

In a survey of favorite activities, 'Reading' was chosen by 25 students and 'Video Games' by 60. A new category, 'Coding', is added. If 'Coding' is twice as popular as 'Reading' but has 10 fewer votes than 'Video Games', how many students chose 'Coding'?
A.50
B.40
C.70
