Identify variables, constants, and operation keywords in word phrases.
Translate simple word phrases involving one operation into algebraic expressions.
Translate multi-step word phrases into algebraic expressions, correctly applying the order of operations.
Recognize and correctly use parentheses when writing expressions for sums or differences that are multiplied or divided.
Differentiate between expressions that require a specific order (like subtraction and division) and those that do not (like addition and multiplication).
Write variable expressions to represent real-world scenarios.
Ever wonder how mathematicians turn everyday problems into powerful equations? 🧐 It all starts with understanding how to write variable expressions!

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
VariableA symbol, usually a letter, that represents an unknown or changing quantity. In the expression 'x + 5', 'x' is the variable.
ConstantA value that does not change; a fixed number. In the expression 'x + 5', '5' is the constant.
Algebraic ExpressionA mathematical phrase that contains variables, numbers, and at least one operation, but no equals sign.Examples include '3y', 'a - 7', or '2x + 4'.
CoefficientThe numerical factor multiplied by a variable in an algebraic term.In the term '7p', '7' is the coefficient.
TermA single number, a single variable, or a product of numbers and variables within an expression, separated by addition or subtraction signs. In '3x + 2y - 5...

Core Formulas
Addition Keywords
If you see words like 'sum', 'increased by', 'more than', 'plus', 'total', 'added to', use the addition symbol: $a + b$
These words tell you to combine quantities. The order usually doesn't matter for addition, but it's good practice to follow the word order unless 'more than' is used (e.g., '5 more than x' is $x+5$).
Subtraction Keywords
If you see words like 'difference', 'decreased by', 'less than', 'minus', 'subtracted from', use the subtraction symbol: $a - b$
Be careful with 'less than' and 'subtracted from' – the order is often reversed. For example, '5 less than x' means $x - 5$, no...
