Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
SubtractionThe mathematical operation of finding the difference between two numbers. In $5,000,000 - 2,000,000 = 3,000,000$, subtraction is used to find the difference of three million.
MinuendThe number from which another number is subtracted (the larger number in a standard subtraction problem). In $7,500,000 - 1,200,000 = 6,300,000$, the minuend is $7,500,000$.
SubtrahendThe number that is being subtracted from the minuend. In $7,500,000 - 1,200,000 = 6,300,000$, the subtrahend is $1,200,000$.
DifferenceThe result obtained when one number is subtracted from another. In $7,500,000 - 1,200,000 = 6,300,000$, the difference is $6,300,000$.
Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number (e.g., ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, millions). In the number $4,5...

Core Formulas
Column Subtraction Algorithm
1. Align the numbers vertically by their place values (ones under ones, tens under tens, etc.).
2. Start subtracting from the rightmost column (ones place).
3. If a digit in the minuend is smaller than the digit below it in the subtrahend, proceed to regroup.
This is the fundamental method for subtracting multi-digit numbers, ensuring that you subtract corresponding place values correctly.
Regrouping Principle
When a digit in the minuend is smaller than the corresponding digit in the subtrahend, 'borrow' 1 from the digit to its immediate left (in the next higher place value). This borrowed 1 is added as 10 units to the current place value. Remember to reduce the digit from which you borrowed by 1.
Regrouping is essential when direct sub...

B.6,050,300
C.4,225,500
D.5,325,500
Challenging
A number is subtracted from 5,000,000, and the result is 2,111,111. If you then add 1,500,000 to that result, what is the new final answer?
A.3,611,111
B.2,888,889
