Learning Objectives
Identify terms, coefficients, and constants in an algebraic expression.
Define and identify like terms within an equation.
Combine like terms on one side of a one-variable equation.
Apply the properties of equality to isolate the variable after combining like terms.
Solve one-variable linear equations that require combining like terms.
Check their solutions by substituting the value back into the original equation.
Ever tried to organize your toys, putting all the cars together and all the blocks together? 🚗🧱 That's a bit like what we do in math when we solve equations!
In this lesson, you'll learn how to simplify equations by grouping similar parts, called 'like terms,' before finding the value of an unknown variable. This skill is...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
TermA single number, a variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. Terms are separated by addition or subtraction signs.In the expression `3x + 5 - y`, `3x`, `5`, and `-y` are terms.
VariableA letter or symbol (like 'x' or 'y') used to represent an unknown numerical value in an equation or expression.In the equation `2x + 7 = 15`, 'x' is the variable.
CoefficientThe numerical factor that multiplies a variable in an algebraic term. If no number is written, the coefficient is 1.In `5y`, `5` is the coefficient. In `x`, `1` is the coefficient.
ConstantA term that has a fixed numerical value and does not contain any variables.In the expression `4x - 8 + 3y`, `-8` is a constant.
Like TermsTerms that have the exact same variable(s)...

Core Formulas
Combining Like Terms Rule
$ax + bx = (a+b)x$ and $ax - bx = (a-b)x$
To simplify an expression, you can only add or subtract terms that are 'like terms'. When combining, add or subtract their coefficients and keep the variable part exactly the same. This rule applies to constant terms as well.
Addition Property of Equality
If $a=b$, then $a+c = b+c$
You can add the same number or expression to both sides of an equation without changing its balance or solution. Use this to move constant terms or variable terms from one side to the other.
Subtraction Property of Equality
If $a=b$, then $a-c = b-c$
You can subtract the same number or expression from both sides of an equation without changing its balance or solution. Use this to move constant terms or variable t...

Challenging
The perimeter of a rectangle is 58 cm. The length is 5 cm more than the width, `w`. The equation for the perimeter is `w + (w + 5) + w + (w + 5) = 58`. What is the width of the rectangle?
A.w = 12 cm
B.w = 17 cm
C.w = 14.5 cm
D.w = 48 cm
Challenging
Solve for x: `-4x + 7 - 3x + 5x + 9 = 10`
A.x = -3
B.x = 6
C.x = 3
D.x = -1.5
Challenging
Solve for k: `9k - 4 - 2k + 10 = 15`
A.k = 9/7
B.k = 7/9
C.k = 1
D.k = 3
