Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Accurately plot positive and negative integers on a horizontal number line. Compare any two integers using the symbols <, >, and = by observing their positions on a number line. Order a set of integers from least to greatest and greatest to least. Identify the opposite of any given integer and explain its relationship to zero on the number line. Define and find the absolute value of an integer as its distance from zero. Calculate the distance between two integers on a number line. If it's -5°C in the morning and it warms up to 8°C in the afternoon, how can we visualize that temperature change? 🌡️ This tutorial will introduce you to integers, which include positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero. We will use the number line as a powerful v...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample IntegerA whole number (not a fraction or decimal) that can be positive, negative, or zero.-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 are all integers. Number LineA straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals along its length. Zero is in the center, positive numbers are to the right, and negative numbers are to the left.<... -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 ...> Positive IntegerAn integer that is greater than zero. These are located to the right of zero on a number line.5, 12, 100 Negative IntegerAn integer that is less than zero. These are located to the left of zero on a number line.-1, -8, -50 OppositesTwo integers that are the same distance from zero on a number line, but on opposite sides. The opposite of 4 is -4. The opposite of -9 is 9. Absolute ValueThe distance an intege...

Core Formulas

Comparing Integers on a Number Line For any two integers 'a' and 'b', if 'a' is to the right of 'b' on the number line, then a > b. Use this rule to compare integers. The further right a number is, the greater its value. The further left it is, the smaller its value. Finding the Opposite The opposite of an integer 'a' is '-a'. The opposite of '-a' is 'a'. To find the opposite of a number, simply change its sign. The opposite of a positive number is negative, and the opposite of a negative number is positive. Calculating Absolute Value The absolute value of 'a', written as |a|, is the non-negative value of 'a'. |a| = a if a ≥ 0, and |a| = -a if a < 0. This is a fo...
