Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
AreaThe amount of two-dimensional space a shape covers, measured in square units (e.g., square centimeters, square meters).A square with sides of 5 cm has an area of 25 square centimeters (25 cm²).
RectangleA four-sided flat shape where all angles are right angles (90 degrees) and opposite sides are equal in length.A standard piece of paper is a rectangle, typically 8.5 inches by 11 inches.
Length (l)The measurement of the longer side of a rectangle. In a rectangle that is 10 cm by 5 cm, the length is 10 cm.
Width (w)The measurement of the shorter side of a rectangle. In a rectangle that is 10 cm by 5 cm, the width is 5 cm.
Outer RectangleThe larger rectangle that completely encloses another smaller rectangle. If you have a small picture inside a larger frame, the outer...

Core Formulas
Area of a Rectangle
$A = l \times w$
To find the area (A) of any rectangle, multiply its length (l) by its width (w). Remember to use consistent units.
Area Between Two Rectangles
$A_{between} = A_{outer} - A_{inner}$
To find the area of the region between two rectangles, calculate the area of the outer (larger) rectangle and subtract the area of the inner (smaller) rectangle. This works when one rectangle is entirely inside the other.
