Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
DecimalA number that contains a decimal point, representing a part of a whole. It extends the place value system to include tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on.3.14 (three and fourteen hundredths), 0.5 (five tenths), $12.75 (twelve dollars and seventy-five cents).
Word ProblemA mathematical problem presented in a narrative or story format, requiring you to read carefully, identify the relevant information, and determine the correct operations to solve it.Sarah bought a shirt for $15.75 and a hat for $8.20. How much did she spend in total?
Keywords for AdditionWords or phrases in a word problem that typically indicate the need to add numbers together.'total,' 'sum,' 'in all,' 'altogether,' 'combined,' 'incr...

Core Formulas
Rule for Adding Decimals
1. Align the decimal points vertically. 2. Add zeros to the end of numbers if needed so all numbers have the same number of decimal places. 3. Add the digits in each column from right to left, carrying over if necessary. 4. Place the decimal point in the sum directly below the aligned decimal points.
Use this rule when a word problem asks you to combine quantities, find a total amount, or determine a sum. For example, if you have $A$ and $B$, their sum is $A + B$.
Rule for Subtracting Decimals
1. Align the decimal points vertically. 2. Add zeros to the end of numbers if needed so all numbers have the same number of decimal places. 3. Subtract the digits in each column from right to left, borrowing if necessary. 4. Place the decimal point in the differe...

A student solved 9.05 - 3.48 and got 5.67. Their work showed they correctly borrowed from the 9 to make the 0 a 10 (then a 9), but then wrote 15 - 8 = 7. What specific error from the 'Common Pitfalls' tutorial does this represent?
A.Not aligning decimal points.
B.Forgetting to add trailing zeros.
C.Incorrectly identifying the operation.
D.An error in borrowing/carrying.
Challenging
An athlete is training for a 15.5-kilometer race. On Monday, she ran 4.75 km. On Tuesday, she ran 1.2 km farther than she did on Monday. The race is on Friday. How many kilometers must she run on Wednesday to complete her training distance, assuming she does not run on Thursday?
A.4.8 kilometers
B.10.7 kilometers
C.9.55 kilometers
D.5.95 kilometers
Challenging
A scientist has a 2.5-liter beaker of a solution. She pours out 0.65 liters for an experiment. She then spills 0.125 liters by accident. How much solution is left in the beaker?
A.1.725 liters
B.1.85 liters
C.0.775 liters
D.1.975 liters
