Learning Objectives
Define 'lowest terms' for a fraction.
Identify common factors of the numerator and denominator.
Find the greatest common factor (GCF) of two numbers.
Simplify fractions to their lowest terms using common factors.
Determine if a fraction is already in its lowest terms.
Apply fraction simplification in real-world contexts.
Have you ever shared a pizza and ended up with a slice that looked bigger than someone else's, even if you both got 'half'? 🍕 Sometimes, fractions can look different but mean the same amount!
In this lesson, you'll learn how to write fractions in their simplest form, also known as 'lowest terms'. This skill helps us understand and compare fractions more easily, making math clearer and more efficie...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
FractionA number that represents a part of a whole. It is written as a numerator over a denominator. In the fraction $\frac{3}{4}$, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator.
NumeratorThe top number in a fraction, showing how many parts of the whole are being considered. In $\frac{2}{5}$, the numerator is 2.
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction, showing the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.In $\frac{2}{5}$, the denominator is 5.
Equivalent FractionsFractions that represent the same value or amount, even though they have different numerators and denominators.$\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{2}{4}$ are equivalent fractions because they both represent half of something.
Common FactorA number that divides evenly into two or more other numbers. For the n...

Core Formulas
Rule for Equivalent Fractions (Division)
To simplify a fraction, you can divide both the numerator and the denominator by the same non-zero common factor. $\frac{a}{b} = \frac{a \div c}{b \div c}$ (where $c$ is a common factor of $a$ and $b$, and $c \neq 0$)
This rule allows you to create an equivalent fraction that is simpler. You must divide both numbers by the exact same factor to keep the fraction's value the same.
Rule for Writing in Lowest Terms
To write a fraction in its lowest terms, divide both the numerator and the denominator by their Greatest Common Factor (GCF). $\frac{a}{b} = \frac{a \div \text{GCF}(a,b)}{b \div \text{GCF}(a,b)}$
Dividing by the GCF ensures that the resulting fraction will be in its lowest terms in a single step, as there will be no other...
