Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
SubtractionThe mathematical operation of finding the difference between two numbers. If you have 15 apples and eat 7, you subtract 7 from 15 to find 8 remaining.
MinuendThe number from which another number is subtracted (the larger number in a standard subtraction problem). In the problem $5,000 - 2,500 = 2,500$, the minuend is $5,000.
SubtrahendThe number that is being subtracted from the minuend. In the problem $5,000 - 2,500 = 2,500$, the subtrahend is $2,500.
DifferenceThe result obtained when one number is subtracted from another. In the problem $5,000 - 2,500 = 2,500$, the difference is $2,500.
Keywords for SubtractionWords or phrases in word problems that often indicate that subtraction is the required operation.Common keywords include 'how many left', &...

Core Formulas
Standard Subtraction Algorithm
$A - B = D$
Align numbers by place value (ones under ones, tens under tens, etc.). Subtract column by column starting from the rightmost digit (ones place). If a digit in the minuend is smaller than the corresponding digit in the subtrahend, regroup (borrow) from the digit in the next higher place value.
Identifying Subtraction Keywords
Look for specific words or phrases in the word problem.
If the problem asks for 'the difference', 'how much more/less', 'how many are left', 'remaining', 'decrease by', or 'take away', it usually indicates a subtraction operation. The initial or larger quantity is the minuend, and the quantity being removed or compared is the subtrahend.
