Define and identify the 'stem' and 'leaf' components of a stem-and-leaf plot.
Construct a stem-and-leaf plot from a given set of numerical data.
Interpret data presented in a stem-and-leaf plot to answer questions about the data set.
Identify the key of a stem-and-leaf plot and explain its purpose.
Compare and contrast different data sets using stem-and-leaf plots.
Recognize the advantages of using a stem-and-leaf plot for organizing numerical data.
Have you ever collected a lot of numbers and wished there was a neat way to organize them so you could see patterns easily? 📊
In this lesson, you'll learn about stem-and-leaf plots, a clever way to display numerical data that keeps all the original values while showing their distribu...

TermDefinitionExample
Stem-and-Leaf PlotA special type of table used to display numerical data, where each data value is split into a 'stem' (the leading digit(s)) and a 'leaf' (the trailing digit). If the number is 23, the stem is 2 and the leaf is 3. If the number is 105, the stem is 10 and the leaf is 5.
StemThe leading digit or digits of a number in a stem-and-leaf plot. It represents the 'tens' place, 'hundreds' place, or more, depending on the data.In the number 47, the stem is 4. In the number 125, the stem is 12.
LeafThe trailing digit of a number in a stem-and-leaf plot, usually the ones digit. Each leaf is plotted to the right of its stem.In the number 47, the leaf is 7. In the number 125, the leaf is 5.

Core Formulas
Rule for Determining Stem and Leaf
For most two-digit numbers, the tens digit is the stem, and the ones digit is the leaf. For three-digit numbers, the first two digits (hundreds and tens) can be the stem, and the ones digit is the leaf. Always decide based on the range of your data.
This rule helps you correctly split each data point into its two components before plotting. Consistency is key across the entire data set.
Rule for Constructing a Stem-and-Leaf Plot
1. Order the data from least to greatest. 2. Determine the stems (usually the tens digits for two-digit numbers). 3. Draw a vertical line. Write the stems in ascending order to the left of the line. 4. For each data point, write its leaf (the ones digit) to the right of its stem, in ascending order. 5. Create a key to...
