Define absolute value as the distance of a number from zero.
Identify and correctly use the absolute value symbol (| |).
Determine the absolute value of any positive integer.
Determine the absolute value of any negative integer.
Determine the absolute value of zero.
Evaluate simple expressions involving absolute value symbols.
Explain the concept of absolute value using a number line.
Have you ever wondered how far you are from home, no matter which direction you go? 🏡 That's a bit like absolute value – it's all about distance!
In this lesson, we'll explore absolute value, which tells us how far a number is from zero on a number line. Understanding absolute value helps us measure distances and compare magnitudes, no matter if the number...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Absolute ValueThe absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on a number line. Distance is always a positive value or zero. The absolute value of 5 is 5, and the absolute value of -5 is also 5. Both are 5 units away from 0.
Absolute Value SymbolWe use two vertical bars, | |, to show the absolute value of a number. For example, |3| means 'the absolute value of 3'.$|-7|$ means 'the absolute value of negative 7'.
IntegerIntegers are all whole numbers (like 0, 1, 2, 3...) and their opposites (like -1, -2, -3...). They do not include fractions or decimals.Examples of integers are -10, -3, 0, 5, 12.
Number LineA number line is a straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals or segments along its length. It helps us visualize numbers and...

Core Formulas
Absolute Value of a Positive Number
$|a| = a \text{ if } a > 0$
If the number inside the absolute value bars is positive, its absolute value is the number itself. The distance from zero is simply the number's value.
Absolute Value of a Negative Number
$|-a| = a \text{ if } a > 0$
If the number inside the absolute value bars is negative, its absolute value is its positive opposite. The distance from zero is always positive.
Absolute Value of Zero
$|0| = 0$
The absolute value of zero is zero, because zero is zero units away from itself.
