Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify and classify different types of quadrilaterals (squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids). Understand the concept of area as the amount of surface covered by a two-dimensional shape. Calculate the area of squares using the formula $A = s^2$. Calculate the area of rectangles using the formula $A = l \times w$. Calculate the area of parallelograms using the formula $A = b \times h$. Calculate the area of trapezoids using the formula $A = \frac{1}{2} \times (b_1 + b_2) \times h$. Solve real-world problems involving the area of quadrilaterals, including choosing appropriate units. Ever wondered how much paint you'd need to cover a wall, or how much carpet to buy for your room? 🤔 This lesson will teach you how to figure that out! In th...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample QuadrilateralA polygon (a closed 2D shape) that has exactly four straight sides and four angles.Squares, rectangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids are all types of quadrilaterals. AreaThe amount of surface a two-dimensional shape covers, measured in square units (like square inches, square feet, or square meters). If a square has sides of 2 cm, its area is 4 square centimeters (4 cm²). BaseAny side of a polygon that is chosen to be the 'bottom' for the purpose of calculating its area. For parallelograms and trapezoids, it's usually one of the parallel sides. In a rectangle, the length can be considered the base. HeightThe perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite side or vertex. It must form a 90-degree angle with the base.In a parallelogram,...

Core Formulas

Area of a Square $A = s^2$ To find the area of a square, multiply the length of one side (s) by itself. The 's' stands for side length. Area of a Rectangle $A = l \times w$ To find the area of a rectangle, multiply its length (l) by its width (w). Area of a Parallelogram $A = b \times h$ To find the area of a parallelogram, multiply the length of its base (b) by its perpendicular height (h). Remember, the height must be perpendicular to the base. Area of a Trapezoid $A = \frac{1}{2} \times (b_1 + b_2) \times h$ To find the area of a trapezoid, add the lengths of its two parallel bases ($b_1$ and $b_2$), multiply by the perpendicular height (h), and then divide by 2 (or multiply by $\frac{1}{2}$).
