Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample DividendThe number that is being divided in a division problem. In 12.5 รท 5, 12.5 is the dividend. DivisorThe number by which another number (the dividend) is divided. In 12.5 รท 5, 5 is the divisor. QuotientThe answer to a division problem. In 12.5 รท 5 = 2.5, 2.5 is the quotient. Decimal PointA symbol used to separate the whole number part from the fractional part of a number. In 3.14, the dot between 3 and 14 is the decimal point. Word ProblemA mathematical problem presented in text form, often describing a real-life situation. If a 10.5-meter rope is cut into 3 equal pieces, how long is each piece? UnitA standard quantity used to measure something, such as meters, dollars, or liters. In '2.5 meters', 'meters' is the unit.

Core Formulas

Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number When dividing a decimal by a whole number, perform long division as usual. Place the decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. This rule applies when your divisor is a whole number. You don't need to move any decimal points before dividing, just make sure to line up the decimal point in your answer. Dividing a Decimal by a Decimal To divide by a decimal, first move the decimal point in the divisor to the right until it becomes a whole number. Then, move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places to the right. Finally, perform long division and place the decimal point in the quotient directly above the new decimal point in the dividend. This rule transforms the problem into dividi...
