Ever tried to fit 12 cookies into a box that only holds 10? 🍪 You'd need another box, right? That's a bit like 'regrouping' in math!
In this lesson, we'll explore the essential skill of regrouping tens and ones. You'll learn how to 'carry over' in addition and 'borrow' in...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number (e.g., in 34, the '3' is in the tens place and represents 30, while the '4' is in the ones place and represents 4).In the number 57, the digit 5 has a place value of 50 (5 tens), and the digit 7 has a place value of 7 (7 ones).
Ones PlaceThe rightmost position in a whole number, representing single units.In the number 23, the digit 3 is in the ones place.
Tens PlaceThe position to the left of the ones place, representing groups of ten.In the number 23, the digit 2 is in the tens place, representing 20.
RegroupingThe process of exchanging values between different place values (e.g., exchanging 10 ones for 1 ten, or 1 ten for 10 ones) to make addition or subtraction easier.When adding...

Core Formulas
Regrouping Rule for Addition (Carrying)
If the sum of the digits in the ones place is 10 or greater, then:
$ \text{New Ones Digit} = (\text{Ones Digit}_1 + \text{Ones Digit}_2) \pmod{10} $
$ \text{Carry Ten} = \lfloor (\text{Ones Digit}_1 + \text{Ones Digit}_2) / 10 \rfloor $
When adding numbers, if the total in the ones column is 10 or more, you write down the ones digit of that total and 'carry' the tens digit to the tens column to be added with the other tens.
Regrouping Rule for Subtraction (Borrowing)
If the digit in the ones place of the top number is smaller than the digit in the ones place of the bottom number, then:
$ \text{Decrease Tens Digit of Top Number by 1} $
$ \text{Increase Ones Digit of Top Number by 10} $
When subtracting, if you can't s...

Challenging
Using the 'Regrouping Rule for Addition' from the tutorial, if you add two numbers and the sum of their ones digits is 19, what happens?
A.You write '1' in the ones place and carry '9' to the tens place.
B.You write '19' in the ones place.
C.You write '9' in the ones place and carry '1' to the tens place.
D.You write '0' in the ones place and carry '1' to the tens place.
Challenging
Which of the following subtraction problems requires regrouping from the tens place to the ones place to solve?
A.88 - 44
B.53 - 29
C.95 - 12
