Learning Objectives
Identify and name the key components of a bar graph (title, axes, labels, scale, bars).
Accurately read and extract specific data values from a bar graph.
Compare two or more data values presented in a bar graph.
Calculate sums and differences of data values from a bar graph to answer questions.
Draw simple conclusions and make observations based on the data displayed in a bar graph.
Understand and use the scale on the y-axis to interpret bar heights correctly.
Ever wondered how your favorite sports team tracks wins and losses, or how a store knows which toy is most popular? 📊 It's all about understanding data!
In this lesson, you'll learn how to read and understand bar graphs, which are powerful tools for showing information clearly. We'...

TermDefinitionExample
Bar GraphA type of graph that uses rectangular bars to show and compare different amounts or categories of data.A bar graph showing the number of students who prefer apples, bananas, or oranges.
TitleThe name of the bar graph, telling you what information is being displayed. If a graph is about 'Favorite Ice Cream Flavors', that is its title.
Axis (Axes)The two main lines that form the graph. The horizontal line is the X-axis (categories), and the vertical line is the Y-axis (values). On a graph of 'Favorite Sports', the X-axis might list 'Soccer', 'Basketball', 'Baseball', and the Y-axis might show 'Number of Students'.
LabelWords or numbers that describe what each axis represents or what each bar stands for....

Core Formulas
Rule for Reading a Single Data Point
$$\text{Data Value} = \text{Height of Bar at Category on Y-axis}$$
To find the value for a specific category, locate the bar for that category on the X-axis. Then, look across from the top of the bar to the Y-axis to read the corresponding number. Make sure to use the scale correctly.
Rule for Comparing Two Data Points (Difference)
$$\text{Difference} = |\text{Value}_A - \text{Value}_B|$$
To find how much more or less one category has than another, first read the data value for each category. Then, subtract the smaller value from the larger value. The absolute value ensures the difference is always positive.
Rule for Finding a Total
$$\text{Total} = \text{Value}_1 + \text{Value}_2 + \dots + \text{Value}_n$$
To find the total amoun...

A.6.25 hours
B.25 hours
C.7.0 hours
D.5.75 hours
Challenging
A bar graph shows 'Recycling Drive Results': Paper (70 kg), Plastic (40 kg), Glass (55 kg), Aluminum (30 kg). The school earns $0.25 for every kilogram of aluminum. If they collect this amount of aluminum for 6 months in a row, how much money will they earn from aluminum?
A.$7.50
B.$45.00
C.$180.00
D.$30.25
Challenging
A bar graph shows 'Student's Favorite Sports'. The total number of students surveyed is 72. If the data shown on the graph represents only the students from Mr. Smith's class, and there are 120 students in the entire 5th grade, what fraction of the 5th grade was NOT surveyed?
A.72/120
B.3/5
C.2/5
