Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the x-axis and y-axis on a coordinate plane. Locate and plot points on a coordinate plane given an ordered pair (x, y). Read the ordered pair (x, y) for a given point on a graph. Understand that a graph visually represents a relationship between two quantities. Find the y-value on a graph when given a specific x-value. Find the x-value on a graph when given a specific y-value. Interpret simple real-world scenarios represented by points on a graph. Have you ever looked at a map to find a treasure or a specific location? 🗺️ Math graphs are like special maps that help us find information and understand connections! In this lesson, you'll learn how to read information from graphs drawn on a special grid called a coordinate plane. This skill h...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample Coordinate PlaneA flat surface made of two number lines that cross each other, used to locate points.Imagine a checkerboard; it's like a coordinate plane where each square has a specific address. x-axisThe horizontal (left-to-right) number line on the coordinate plane. When you walk across a room, you are moving along an imaginary x-axis. y-axisThe vertical (up-and-down) number line on the coordinate plane. When you climb stairs, you are moving along an imaginary y-axis. OriginThe point where the x-axis and y-axis cross, located at (0,0). It's the starting point for finding other points. The exact center of a target is like the origin (0,0). Ordered PairA pair of numbers (x, y) that tells you the exact location of a point on the coordinate plane. The first num...

Core Formulas

Locating a Point (x, y) To find a point `(x, y)`: Start at the origin `(0,0)`. Move horizontally along the x-axis by `x` units (right if `x` is positive, left if `x` is negative). Then, from that spot, move vertically along the y-axis by `y` units (up if `y` is positive, down if `y` is negative). Use this rule to plot a point on the coordinate plane when you know its ordered pair, or to identify the coordinates of a point already plotted. Finding y-value from a given x-value on a graph 1. Find the given `x`-value on the x-axis. 2. Move vertically (straight up or down) from that `x`-value until you reach a point on the graph. 3. From that point on the graph, move horizontally (straight left or right) until you reach the y-axis. The number you land on is the corresponding `y`-va...

Sample Practice Questions

Challenging
A graph shows the fuel in a car's tank. The x-axis is 'Distance Driven (miles)' and the y-axis is 'Fuel in Tank (gallons)'. The graph is a straight line that starts at (0, 10) and goes down to (100, 5). How much fuel is in the tank after driving 50 miles?
A.5 gallons
B.6.5 gallons
C.7.5 gallons
D.8 gallons
Challenging
A graph shows the total savings in a piggy bank each week. The x-axis is 'Week' and the y-axis is 'Total Savings ($)'. The graph is a line that passes through the points (1, 5), (2, 10), and (3, 15). Assuming the pattern continues, what will the total savings be in Week 6?
A.$20
B.$25
C.$30
D.$35
Challenging
A graph shows the cost of scoops of ice cream. The x-axis is 'Number of Scoops' and the y-axis is 'Cost ($)'. The line passes through (1, 2), (2, 4), and (3, 6). What is the combined cost of one order of 2 scoops and another order of 4 scoops?
A.$6
B.$8
C.$10
D.$12
