Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify if a whole number is divisible by 2 by checking its last digit. Identify if a whole number is divisible by 5 by checking its last digit. Identify if a whole number is divisible by 10 by checking its last digit. Explain why a number is divisible by 2, 5, or 10 using the correct rule. Sort a list of numbers based on their divisibility by 2, 5, and 10. Apply divisibility rules to determine if a number is divisible by more than one of these numbers (e.g., both 2 and 5). Use divisibility rules to solve simple real-world problems involving equal groups. Have you ever tried to share candy with friends and wanted to make sure everyone gets the same amount with none left over? ๐Ÿฌ These rules are the secret to doing that super fast! In this lesson, you...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample DivisibleA number is 'divisible' by another number if it can be divided exactly, with a remainder of 0.12 is divisible by 2 because 12 รท 2 = 6 with a remainder of 0. DivisorThe number that you are dividing by.In the problem 15 รท 5 = 3, the number 5 is the divisor. RemainderThe amount 'left over' after a division problem that doesn't divide evenly. In the problem 13 รท 2 = 6 R1, the number 1 is the remainder. Even NumberA whole number that can be divided exactly by 2. All even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.4, 38, and 570 are all even numbers. Odd NumberA whole number that cannot be divided exactly by 2. All odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.7, 21, and 863 are all odd numbers. Last Digit (Ones Place)The digit in the far-right position of a wh...

Core Formulas

Divisibility Rule for 2 A number is divisible by 2 if its last digit is an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8). Use this rule to quickly check if a number is even. If you can split a number into two equal groups with nothing left over, it's divisible by 2. Divisibility Rule for 5 A number is divisible by 5 if its last digit is 0 or 5. Use this rule when you want to see if a number can be broken into groups of 5. Think about counting by fives! Divisibility Rule for 10 A number is divisible by 10 if its last digit is 0. This is the easiest rule! Use it to see if a number can be broken into groups of 10. If it ends in 0, it works.
