Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample DecimalA number that uses a decimal point to show parts of a whole, representing fractions with denominators that are powers of ten (e.g., tenths, hundredths).3.5 (three and five tenths) or 0.75 (seventy-five hundredths). Addition SentenceA mathematical statement showing that two or more numbers (addends) are combined to get a total (sum).2.3 + ⬜ = 5.8 Subtraction SentenceA mathematical statement showing that one number (subtrahend) is taken away from another (minuend) to find the difference.7.1 - ⬜ = 3.2 Inverse OperationsOperations that undo each other. Addition is the inverse of subtraction, and subtraction is the inverse of addition. To solve ⬜ + 2 = 5, you use the inverse operation: 5 - 2 = 3. MinuendThe first number in a subtraction problem, from which anothe...

Core Formulas

Finding a Missing Addend If $a + \text{⬜} = c$ or $\text{⬜} + b = c$, then $\text{⬜} = c - a$ (or $c - b$). To find a missing addend in an addition sentence, subtract the known addend from the sum. This uses the inverse operation of addition. Finding a Missing Subtrahend If $a - \text{⬜} = c$, then $\text{⬜} = a - c$. To find the missing subtrahend (the number being subtracted) in a subtraction sentence, subtract the difference from the minuend. This also uses the inverse operation. Finding a Missing Minuend If $\text{⬜} - b = c$, then $\text{⬜} = c + b$. To find the missing minuend (the number you start with) in a subtraction sentence, add the subtrahend and the difference. This uses the inverse operation of subtraction.
