Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Accurately align three-digit numbers by their place values. Perform column addition for the ones, tens, and hundreds places. Correctly identify when regrouping is necessary in addition problems. Accurately regroup (carry over) digits from one place value to the next. Solve addition problems involving two or more three-digit numbers with and without regrouping. Apply addition of three-digit numbers to solve real-world problems. Have you ever wondered how stores calculate the total cost of many items, or how many people live in two different towns? 🤔 It all comes down to adding numbers! In this lesson, we're going to become experts at adding three-digit numbers. We'll learn how to line them up correctly, add them column by column, and handle tho...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample AddendA number that is added to another number. In the problem 123 + 456, both 123 and 456 are addends. SumThe result obtained when two or more numbers are added together. In 123 + 456 = 579, the sum is 579. Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number (e.g., ones, tens, hundreds). In the number 345, the digit '3' is in the hundreds place, '4' in the tens place, and '5' in the ones place. Regrouping (Carrying Over)The process of exchanging 10 units of one place value for 1 unit of the next higher place value (e.g., 10 ones become 1 ten).If you add 7 + 5 in the ones column, you get 12. You write down '2' in the ones place and 'regroup' the '1' (which is 1 ten) to the tens column. Ones PlaceT...

Core Formulas

Place Value Alignment Rule When adding numbers, always align them vertically so that digits with the same place value are in the same column. This means ones digits are under ones, tens under tens, and hundreds under hundreds. This is crucial for accurate addition. Column Addition and Regrouping Rule Start adding from the rightmost column (ones place). If the sum of the digits in a column is 10 or greater, write down the ones digit of the sum and 'regroup' (carry over) the tens digit to the top of the next column to the left. This rule applies to the ones, tens, and hundreds columns. Always remember to add any regrouped digits when summing the next column. General Addition Algorithm To find the sum of two three-digit numbers $A$ and $B$: 1. Align $A$ and $B$...
