Introduction & Learning Objectives
Learning Objectives
Convert between related metric units of length, mass, and volume.
Express a metric mixed unit measurement as a single, smaller unit (e.g., 3 m 45 cm = 345 cm).
Express a metric mixed unit measurement as a decimal of the larger unit (e.g., 3 m 45 cm = 3.45 m).
Add two or more metric mixed unit measurements by converting to a common unit.
Subtract metric mixed unit measurements by converting to a common unit.
Solve word problems involving the addition and subtraction of metric mixed units.
Imagine you're on a team building the longest toy car track ever! Your piece is 2 m 50 cm and your friend's is 1 m 75 cm. How do you find the total length? 🏎️
In this lesson, you'll become an expert at combining and comparing measurements that use more tha...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Metric SystemA system of measurement based on the number 10. This makes converting between units as easy as multiplying or dividing by 10, 100, or 1000.Length (meter), Mass (gram), Volume (liter).
Mixed UnitA single measurement that is expressed with two or more related units.4 kg 500 g is a mixed unit of mass. 2 L 250 mL is a mixed unit of volume.
ConversionChanging a measurement from one unit to another without changing its value.Converting 1 meter to 100 centimeters. The length stays the same, but the unit changes.
Base UnitThe standard unit in the metric system for a specific type of measurement. The base unit for length is the meter (m). The base unit for mass is the gram (g).
PrefixA word part added to the beginning of a base unit to show if it's a larger o...

Core Formulas
The 'Convert First' Rule
To add or subtract mixed units, first convert all measurements to the SAME unit.
You cannot directly add or subtract numbers with different units (like meters and centimeters). Always convert everything to a single, common unit (usually the smaller unit is easiest) before doing any calculation.
Key Conversion Formulas
Length: 1 \text{ km} = 1000 \text{ m}; 1 \text{ m} = 100 \text{ cm} \newline Mass: 1 \text{ kg} = 1000 \text{ g} \newline Volume: 1 \text{ L} = 1000 \text{ mL}
These are the most common conversion factors you will use. Memorizing them will make solving problems much faster. Remember 'kilo' means 1000.
