Finding a Common Denominator
To add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators, you must first find a common denominator. This is often the least common multiple (LCM) of the original denominators.
Multiply the numerator and denominator of each fraction by the factor that makes its denominator equal to the common denominator. For example, to add $\frac{a}{b} + \frac{c}{d}$, find the LCM of $b$ and $d$, let's call it $L$. Then, rewrite the fractions as $\frac{a \cdot (L/b)}{b \cdot (L/b)} + \frac{c \cdot (L/d)}{d \cdot (L/d)}$.
