Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Two-Digit NumberA whole number that has a digit in the tens place and a digit in the ones place. It ranges from 10 to 99.In the number 37, '3' is in the tens place and '7' is in the ones place.
One-Digit NumberA whole number that has only a digit in the ones place. It ranges from 0 to 9.The numbers 2, 5, and 9 are all one-digit numbers.
Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number. For example, in 25, the '2' has a value of 20 because it's in the tens place. In the number 48, the digit '4' has a place value of 40 (4 tens), and the digit '8' has a place value of 8 (8 ones).
Ones PlaceThe rightmost position in a whole number, representing individual units. In the number 63, the digit '3'...

Core Formulas
Place Value Alignment Rule
Always align numbers vertically so that digits with the same place value are in the same column. For adding a two-digit number (AB) and a one-digit number (C):
`\begin{array}{r} AB \\ + C \\ \hline \end{array}`
Before you start adding, make sure the ones digit of the two-digit number is directly above the one-digit number, and the tens digit of the two-digit number is in its own column to the left. This prevents errors in calculation.
Add Ones First Rule
Start by adding the digits in the ones column: `B + C = D` (where D is the new ones digit).
Always begin your addition from the rightmost column, which is the ones place. Add the two digits in this column. Since we are not regrouping, the sum will be 9 or less, and you write this sum directly belo...

Challenging
In the equation AB + C = DE, 'AB' is a two-digit number and 'C' is a one-digit number. If B + C = 8 and A = 5, what is the sum DE?
A.85
B.58
C.13
D.50
Challenging
You add a two-digit number to the number 4. The sum is a two-digit number that ends in the digit 7. What was the ones digit of the original two-digit number?
A.7
B.4
C.3
D.11
Challenging
A student correctly solves 41 + 8 = 49 without regrouping. When asked to solve 41 + 9, the student says the answer is 50 because 'now you have to regroup.' Why is the student's reasoning for the answer 50 correct, but their understanding of the rule might be incomplete?
A.Regrouping happens when the sum is 10 or more, and 1 + 9 = 10, which is correct. The student correctly identified the need to regroup.
B.The student should have added the tens first, which would give 4+9=13.
C.Regrouping is never needed when adding a one-digit number.
D.The answer to 41 + 9 is 419, not 50.
