TermDefinitionExample
FractionA number that represents a part of a whole. It has a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number). In the fraction $\frac{3}{4}$, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator.
NumeratorThe top number in a fraction that tells you how many parts of the whole you have.If you eat 2 slices out of a pizza cut into 8 slices, the numerator is 2 ($\frac{2}{8}$).
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction that tells you the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.If a cake is cut into 6 equal pieces, the denominator is 6 ($\frac{1}{6}$).
Like DenominatorsFractions that have the same denominator (the same bottom number).$\frac{1}{5}$, $\frac{2}{5}$, and $\frac{4}{5}$ all have like denominators.
Unlike DenominatorsFractions that have different den...

Core Formulas
Adding Fractions with Like Denominators
$\frac{a}{c} + \frac{b}{c} + \frac{d}{c} = \frac{a+b+d}{c}$
When adding fractions that already have the same denominator, simply add the numerators together and keep the denominator the same. Always simplify your answer if possible.
Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators
1. Find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of all denominators. 2. Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction using the LCM as the new denominator. 3. Add the new numerators and keep the common denominator. 4. Simplify the sum.
This rule is used when fractions have different denominators. You must make them 'like' before you can add them. The LCM helps you find the smallest common denominator.
Simplifying Fractions
Divide both the numerator and the...

A bakery made 100 cookies in the morning. They sold 1/4 of the cookies to the first customer, 1/5 to the second customer, and 1/10 to a third customer who also bought 2 cakes. What fraction of the original cookies have been sold?
A.11/20
B.3/19
C.55/100
D.13/20
Challenging
A group project is divided among three students. Liam completes 1/5 of the project, Maria completes 1/4, and Noah completes 1/2. Have they completed enough of the project to be more than 3/4 finished?
A.Yes, because their total of 19/20 is greater than 3/4.
B.No, because their total of 19/20 is less than 3/4.
C.Yes, because their total of 9/10 is greater than 3/4.
D.No, because their total of 3/11 is less than 3/4.
Challenging
A family budgets its monthly income. They plan to spend 1/3 on housing, 1/4 on food, 1/6 on transportation, and 1/2 on all other expenses. What can you conclude from adding these planned expenses?
A.Their plan is perfect and uses exactly their whole income.
B.Their plan is impossible because the fractions add up to more than 1 whole.
C.Their plan allows them to save 1/12 of their income.
D.Their plan uses less than 3/4 of their income.
