Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Interpret a fraction as a multiple of a unit fraction (e.g., 3/5 is 3 times 1/5). Represent the multiplication of a whole number by a fraction using visual models like number lines or area models. Solve multiplication problems involving a whole number and a fraction. Explain that multiplying a whole number by a fraction less than 1 results in a smaller number (scaling down). Explain that multiplying a whole number by a fraction greater than 1 results in a larger number (scaling up). Solve word problems that require scaling a whole number by a fraction. If you have a pizza with 8 slices and you eat 1/2 of it, how many slices did you eat? 🍕 Let's find out how math gives us the answer! Today, we will learn how to 'scale' whole numbers using...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample ScalingTo change the size of a number by multiplying. When we scale with fractions, we can make the starting number bigger or smaller.Finding 1/2 of 10 scales the number 10 down to 5. Finding 3/2 of 10 scales the number 10 up to 15. Whole NumberA number used for counting, like 0, 1, 2, 3, and so on. It has no fractional or decimal part.In the problem '1/2 of 6', the number 6 is the whole number. NumeratorThe top number in a fraction. It tells us how many parts of the whole we are talking about. In the fraction 3/4, the numerator is 3. DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction. It tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into.In the fraction 3/4, the denominator is 4. Proper FractionA fraction where the numerator is smaller than the denominator. It...

Core Formulas

The Multiplication Rule n * (a/b) = (n * a) / b To multiply a whole number (n) by a fraction (a/b), you multiply the whole number by the numerator (a) and keep the denominator (b) the same. Scaling Down (Shrinking) If a/b < 1, then n * (a/b) < n When you multiply a whole number by a proper fraction (a fraction less than 1), the answer will be smaller than the whole number you started with. Scaling Up (Stretching) If a/b > 1, then n * (a/b) > n When you multiply a whole number by an improper fraction (a fraction greater than 1), the answer will be larger than the whole number you started with.
