Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Compare two fractions with the same denominator by looking at their numerators. Compare two fractions with the same numerator by looking at their denominators. Use benchmark fractions like 0, 1/2, and 1 to estimate and compare fractions. Find a common denominator to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators. Create equivalent fractions to help in ordering. Order a set of three or more fractions from least to greatest and greatest to least. Correctly use the symbols <, >, and = to show the relationship between two fractions. You and a friend are sharing a chocolate bar. 🍫 Would you rather have 1/3 of the bar or 1/4 of the bar? Let's find out which piece is bigger! In this lesson, you will learn how to compare and order fra...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample FractionA number that represents a part of a whole. It has a top number (numerator) and a bottom number (denominator). The fraction 3/5 means you have 3 parts out of a whole that is divided into 5 equal parts. NumeratorThe top number in a fraction. It tells you how many parts of the whole you have.In the fraction 2/3, the numerator is 2. DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction. It tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into.In the fraction 2/3, the denominator is 3. Equivalent FractionsFractions that look different but have the same value. You can create them by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.1/2 is equivalent to 2/4 and 4/8. Common DenominatorA number that is a common multiple of the denominators of two or mor...

Core Formulas

Same Denominator Rule If b = d, and a > c, then a/b > c/d When the denominators (bottom numbers) are the same, the fraction with the larger numerator (top number) is the greater fraction. Same Numerator Rule If a = c, and b < d, then a/b > c/d When the numerators (top numbers) are the same, the fraction with the smaller denominator (bottom number) is the greater fraction. This is because the whole is cut into fewer, larger pieces. Common Denominator Method To compare a/b and c/d, find a common denominator 'k'. Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with the denominator 'k', then compare the new numerators. This is the most reliable method for comparing any two fractions. Find a number that both denominators can multiply into,...
