Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the total number of smaller units within a larger time unit (e.g., 60 minutes in an hour). Calculate a fraction of an hour in minutes (e.g., 1/2 of an hour). Calculate a fraction of a minute in seconds (e.g., 3/4 of a minute). Convert mixed numbers of time units into a single smaller unit (e.g., 1 and 1/2 hours to minutes). Solve one-step and two-step word problems involving fractions of time. Determine what fraction of a larger unit a smaller unit represents (e.g., 15 minutes is 1/4 of an hour). Ever heard someone say, 'See you in a quarter of an hour'? 🤔 Let's figure out exactly how many minutes that is! In this lesson, we will learn how to use fractions to talk about parts of an hour and parts of a minute. This is a super usef...

Core Formulas

Fraction of an Hour to Minutes Minutes = (Fraction) × 60 To find how many minutes are in a fraction of an hour, you multiply the fraction by 60, because there are 60 minutes in one whole hour. Fraction of a Minute to Seconds Seconds = (Fraction) × 60 To find how many seconds are in a fraction of a minute, you multiply the fraction by 60, because there are 60 seconds in one whole minute. Finding the Fraction of an Hour Fraction = Number of Minutes / 60 To find what fraction of an hour a certain number of minutes is, create a fraction with the minutes on top (numerator) and 60 on the bottom (denominator).
