Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify right (90°), straight (180°), and full circle (360°) angles as benchmarks. Classify an angle as acute, obtuse, or right by sight. Use a 90° angle (like the corner of a piece of paper) as a tool for comparison. Estimate the measure of a given acute angle to the nearest 10 degrees. Estimate the measure of a given obtuse angle to the nearest 10 degrees. Visually compare two angles and determine which has a larger or smaller measure. Have you ever wondered how much to tilt your skateboard for a cool trick or how big a slice of pizza you're getting? 🍕 That's all about angles! In this lesson, you will become an 'angle detective'! You will learn how to look at any angle and make a really good guess, or estimate, of its size in degr...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample AngleAn angle is formed when two lines, called rays, meet at a shared point, called the vertex. We measure the amount of turn between the rays. The corner of a square is an angle. The two hands on a clock form an angle. Degree (°)A degree is the unit we use to measure angles. A full circle is made of 360 degrees.A perfect corner, like on a board game, measures 90°. Benchmark AngleAn easy-to-remember angle that we use to help us estimate other angles. The most important benchmark is the right angle.A 90° angle (a perfect corner) and a 180° angle (a straight line) are key benchmark angles. Right AngleAn angle that measures exactly 90°. It looks like the letter 'L' or the corner of a book. The corners of a window or a door frame are right angles. Acute AngleAn a...

Core Formulas

The Right Angle Benchmark Angle ≈ 90° This is your most important tool. If an angle looks like the corner of a square or a piece of paper, it's about 90°. Use this to decide if other angles are bigger or smaller. The Acute Angle Rule Angle < 90° If an angle is smaller or 'skinnier' than a right angle, it's acute. Your estimate must be a number less than 90. The Obtuse Angle Rule 90° < Angle < 180° If an angle is wider or more open than a right angle but not a straight line, it's obtuse. Your estimate must be a number between 90 and 180.
