Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the tenths and hundredths place value in a decimal. Convert fractions with a denominator of 10 or 100 into decimals. Find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100 for fractions with denominators of 2, 4, 5, 20, 25, and 50. Convert fractions like 1/4 and 3/5 into decimals. Convert mixed numbers into decimals by handling the whole number and fraction parts separately. Represent equivalent fractions and decimals on a number line. Write a decimal in the tenths or hundredths as a fraction. Have you ever seen a price like $2.50? That's a decimal, and it's the exact same amount as 2 and 1/2 dollars! 💰 In this lesson, we will explore how fractions and decimals are two different ways to write the same value. Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample FractionA number that shows a part of a whole. It has a numerator (the top number) and a denominator (the bottom number). The fraction 3/10 means we have 3 parts out of 10 total parts. DecimalA number with a decimal point that separates the whole number part from the fractional part. The number 1.5 has one whole and five tenths. Decimal PointThe dot used to separate the ones place from the tenths place in a decimal number. In the number 4.9, the dot between the 4 and the 9 is the decimal point. TenthsThe first place value to the right of the decimal point. It represents parts out of 10.In 0.6, the 6 is in the tenths place, which is the same as the fraction 6/10. HundredthsThe second place value to the right of the decimal point. It represents parts out of 100.In 0.82, t...

Core Formulas

Converting Tenths \frac{n}{10} = 0.n If a fraction's denominator is 10, the numerator becomes the first digit after the decimal point (the tenths place). Converting Hundredths \frac{nn}{100} = 0.nn If a fraction's denominator is 100, the numerator becomes the two digits after the decimal point. If the numerator is a single digit (like 8), you must add a zero in the tenths place: 8/100 = 0.08. Converting Mixed Numbers W \frac{n}{10} = W.n For a mixed number, the whole number (W) stays to the left of the decimal point. Convert the fraction part and place it to the right of the decimal point.
