TermDefinitionExample
Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number. Each place is 10 times greater than the place to its right. In the number 245,800,100, the digit 4 is in the ten millions place, so its value is 40,000,000.
DigitAny of the numerals from 0 to 9 that are used to form numbers. The number 1,234,567 has seven digits.
Greater Than (>)A symbol used to show that the first number has a larger value than the second number.9,500 > 9,499
Less Than (<)A symbol used to show that the first number has a smaller value than the second number.120,000,000 < 121,000,000
Equal To (=)A symbol used to show that two numbers or quantities have the same value.500,000 + 1 = 500,001

Core Formulas
The Digit Count Rule
If Number A has more digits than Number B, then Number A > Number B.
This is the first and fastest check. Before comparing any digits, simply count how many digits are in each number. The number with more digits is always greater.
The Left-to-Right Scan Rule
If two numbers have the same number of digits, compare them digit by digit from left to right. Let $d_A$ be a digit from Number A and $d_B$ be a digit from Number B at the same place value. The first place where $d_A \neq d_B$ determines which number is greater.
Use this rule when two numbers are the same length. Line them up and start at the largest place value (the far left). Move to the right until you find a place where the digits are different. The number with the larger digit in that place i...
