Learning Objectives
Identify the key parts of a circle graph, including the title, labels, and sectors.
Explain that a complete circle graph represents a whole or 100% of the data.
Read and interpret data presented in a circle graph to understand what it shows.
Visually compare the sectors of a circle graph to determine which categories are largest, smallest, or equal.
Relate common fractions, such as 1/2 and 1/4, to the corresponding sectors of a circle graph.
Answer simple questions based on the information presented in a circle graph.
If a pizza was cut into slices to show your class's favorite toppings, which topping would get the biggest slice? 🍕 Let's find out how graphs can show us!
Today, we are going to learn about a special kind of graph called a circle...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Circle Graph (or Pie Chart)A graph shaped like a circle that is divided into slices to show how a whole amount is broken up into parts.A chart showing that out of all students, 1/2 have dogs, 1/4 have cats, and 1/4 have other pets.
SectorA slice or wedge-shaped section of the circle graph. Each sector stands for a different category or part of the whole. In a 'Favorite Colors' graph, the blue slice is one sector, and the red slice is another sector.
WholeThe total amount of everything being shown in the graph. The entire circle represents the whole. If the graph shows the pets of 20 students, the 'whole' is all 20 students.
TitleThe name of the circle graph, which tells you what information the graph is about.A graph about student pets might have th...

Core Formulas
The Whole Circle Rule
Sum of all sectors = 1 Whole
All the slices (sectors) of the circle graph must add up to the total amount. The entire circle always represents the complete group or 100% of the data.
The Sector Size Rule
Size of Sector ∝ Amount of Data
The size of a sector is directly related to the amount of data it represents. A bigger slice means that category has a larger value or was chosen more often.
The Fraction Rule
Sector = Part / Whole
Each sector represents a fraction of the whole. You can often estimate these fractions by sight, such as 1/2 (half the circle) or 1/4 (a quarter of the circle).
