Explain that multiplication and division are inverse (opposite) operations.
Use a known multiplication fact to solve a related division problem.
Write a multiplication equation that relates to a given division problem.
Write the two related division facts for a given multiplication equation.
Create a complete fact family using a given set of three numbers.
Solve word problems about equal groups by relating division to multiplication.
If you have 15 stickers to share equally among 3 friends, how can you use multiplication to figure out how many stickers each friend gets? 🤔✨
In this lesson, you will discover that multiplication and division are best friends that work together! They are inverse operations, which means they can undo each other. Understandi...

TermDefinitionExample
MultiplicationThe process of putting equal groups together to find the total amount.3 groups of 5 stars is written as 3 x 5 = 15. The total is 15 stars.
DivisionThe process of splitting a total amount into equal groups.15 stars split into 3 equal groups is written as 15 ÷ 3 = 5. There are 5 stars in each group.
Fact FamilyA set of four related multiplication and division facts that use the same three numbers.For the numbers 2, 8, and 16, the fact family is: 2 x 8 = 16, 8 x 2 = 16, 16 ÷ 2 = 8, and 16 ÷ 8 = 2.
Inverse OperationsOperations that undo each other. Multiplication and division are inverse operations. If you multiply 4 x 6 to get 24, you can use division to get back to the start: 24 ÷ 6 = 4.
DividendThe total number that is being divided up in a division probl...

Core Formulas
The Inverse Relationship Rule
If `Factor \times Factor = Product`, then `Product \div Factor = Factor`.
This rule shows that multiplication and division are opposites. If you know a multiplication fact, you can use the same three numbers to figure out the related division fact.
Fact Family Structure
For numbers `a`, `b`, and `c` where `a \times b = c`, the family is: `a \times b = c`, `b \times a = c`, `c \div a = b`, `c \div b = a`.
Use this structure to find all four related facts for any set of three numbers in a multiplication or division equation. This helps you see the whole picture.
Checking Division with Multiplication
To check if `Dividend \div Divisor = Quotient` is correct, calculate `Divisor \times Quotient`. The result should equal the `Dividend`.

A pet store has 36 fish. They are put into 4 equal tanks. Which of the following is the complete fact family that describes this situation?
A.4 x 8 = 32, 8 x 4 = 32, 32 ÷ 4 = 8, 32 ÷ 8 = 4
B.4 x 9 = 36, 36 ÷ 4 = 9, 36 - 9 = 27, 9 + 4 = 13
C.4 x 9 = 36, 9 x 4 = 36, 36 ÷ 4 = 9, 36 ÷ 9 = 4
D.36 ÷ 4 = 9, 36 ÷ 6 = 6, 6 x 6 = 36, 4 x 9 = 36
Challenging
A gardener plants 5 rows of carrots. When finished, there are 45 carrots in total. He used the fact ? x 5 = 45 to plan his garden. If he decides to harvest two full rows of carrots, how many carrots are left in the ground?
A.9
B.18
C.36
D.27
Challenging
A student writes three facts for the numbers 8, 6, and 48: `8 x 6 = 48`, `48 ÷ 8 = 6`, and `48 ÷ 6 = 8`. What is the missing fact, and what mathematical rule does it demonstrate?
A.6 + 8 = 14; It shows addition.
B.6 x 8 = 48; It shows the commutative property of multiplication.
C.48 - 8 = 40; It shows subtraction.
D.8 x 8 = 64; It shows how to multiply by 8.
