Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
AreaThe amount of space inside a flat shape. We measure area in 'square units'.A chocolate bar with 3 rows of 4 squares has an area of 3 x 4 = 12 square pieces.
RectangleA shape with 4 sides and 4 square corners. The opposite sides are the same length.A piece of paper, a door, or a TV screen.
Square UnitA square with sides that are 1 unit long (like 1 inch, 1 centimeter, or 1 foot). We use these to measure area.A single sticky note could be a model for a square unit.
Outer RectangleThe bigger rectangle that is on the outside.In a picture frame, the entire frame including the picture is the outer rectangle.
Inner RectangleThe smaller rectangle that is on the inside.In a picture frame, the space for the picture is the inner rectangle.
Area BetweenThe space th...

Core Formulas
Area of a Rectangle
Area = Length × Width
To find the area of any rectangle, you multiply its length by its width. The answer is always in square units (like square inches or square feet).
Area Between Two Rectangles
Area_{between} = Area_{large} - Area_{small}
To find the area of the space between two rectangles, you first find the area of the large outer rectangle. Then, find the area of the small inner rectangle. Finally, you subtract the small area from the large area.
