Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the dividend, divisor, and quotient in a division sentence. Define what makes a division sentence 'true' or 'false'. Use multiplication facts to check the accuracy of a division sentence. Evaluate division sentences with dividends up to 10 and determine if they are true or false. Correct a false division sentence by finding the correct quotient. Explain why a given division sentence is true or false using words or pictures. ๐Ÿช If you have 8 cookies to share equally between 2 friends, is it true that each friend gets 5 cookies? Let's find out! In this lesson, you will become a math detective! You'll learn how to check if division sentences are correct (true) or incorrect (false). This important skill helps you make s...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample Division SentenceA number sentence that shows one number being divided by another to find an answer. The sentence `10 รท 2 = 5` is a division sentence. DividendThe total number that is being divided or shared into groups. In `8 รท 4 = 2`, the dividend is 8. DivisorThe number you are dividing by. It tells you how many equal groups to make.In `8 รท 4 = 2`, the divisor is 4. QuotientThe answer to a division problem. It tells you how many are in each group. In `8 รท 4 = 2`, the quotient is 2. True SentenceA number sentence where the calculation is correct and the equation is balanced.`6 รท 3 = 2` is a true sentence because 3 groups of 2 equals 6. False SentenceA number sentence where the calculation is incorrect and the equation is not balanced.`6 รท 3 = 1` is a false sentence be...

Core Formulas

The Fact Family Check If `a รท b = c` is true, then `b ร— c = a` must also be true. To check if a division sentence is true, you can turn it into a multiplication sentence. Multiply the divisor and the quotient. If the answer is the dividend, the division sentence is true! The Equal Groups Model `Dividend รท Divisor = Quotient` Think of the dividend as the total number of items. The divisor is the number of equal groups. The quotient is the number of items in each group. If you can't make equal groups with that number of items, the sentence is false.
