Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
DivisionThe act of sharing something into equal groups.10 cookies shared among 5 friends is 10 ÷ 5 = 2 cookies each.
DividendThe total amount of money that you are dividing. In the problem $20 ÷ 4, the dividend is $20.
DivisorThe number of equal groups you are dividing the money into.In the problem $20 ÷ 4, the divisor is 4 (for 4 groups).
QuotientThe answer to a division problem. It's the amount in each group. In the problem $20 ÷ 4 = $5, the quotient is $5.
Equal SharesWhen every group gets the exact same amount. If 3 friends share $9, an equal share is $3 for each friend.
Money NotationThe special way we write money using a dollar sign ($) and a decimal point (.).Five dollars and twenty-five cents is written as $5.25.

Core Formulas
The Division Formula
Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient
Use this to set up your problem. The total money amount (Dividend) is divided by the number of shares (Divisor) to find the amount in each share (Quotient).
Checking with Multiplication
Quotient × Divisor = Dividend
After you find your answer (the quotient), you can check it. Multiply the answer by the number of shares (divisor). If you get the total amount you started with, your answer is correct!
The Decimal Point Rule
Line up the decimal points.
When you divide a money amount, the decimal point in your answer (the quotient) goes directly above the decimal point in the total amount (the dividend).
