Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
DividendThe total number of items you are starting with that you want to divide up.In the problem 'Share 84 crayons among 12 friends', the dividend is 84.
DivisorThe number you are dividing by. It tells you how many equal groups you are making OR how many items are in each group. In the problem 'Share 84 crayons among 12 friends', the divisor is 12.
QuotientThe answer to a division problem. It tells you how many are in each group. For 84 ÷ 12, the quotient is 7, because each friend gets 7 crayons.
RemainderThe amount 'left over' after you have made your equal groups. It's the part that doesn't fit perfectly. If you have 25 cookies to share among 10 friends, each gets 2 (quotient), and there are 5 cookies left over (remainder).

Core Formulas
The Division Equation
Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient
This is the basic way to write a division problem. The total amount (dividend) is split by a certain number (divisor) to find the answer (quotient).
Checking with Multiplication (Inverse Operation)
(Quotient × Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend
Multiplication is the opposite of division. To check your answer, multiply the quotient by the divisor. If there's a remainder, add it. The result should be your original dividend.
