Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample DivisionThe action of splitting a larger number into smaller, equal groups.20 ÷ 5 means splitting 20 into 5 equal groups. DividendThe total number of items you are starting with before you divide. In 35 ÷ 5 = 7, the dividend is 35. DivisorThe number you are dividing by. It tells you how many groups to make or the size of each group. In 35 ÷ 5 = 7, the divisor is 5. QuotientThe answer to a division problem. It tells you how many are in each group. In 35 ÷ 5 = 7, the quotient is 7. Fact FamilyA set of four related multiplication and division facts that use the same three numbers. The fact family for 5, 6, and 30 is: 5 × 6 = 30, 6 × 5 = 30, 30 ÷ 5 = 6, 30 ÷ 6 = 5. Equal GroupsGroups that all have the exact same number of items in them.If you divide 15 pencils into 5 groups,...

Core Formulas

The 'Ends in 0 or 5' Rule A number can be divided evenly by 5 if its last digit is a 0 or a 5. Use this rule to quickly check if a number can be shared into 5 equal groups without any leftovers. For example, 40 ends in 0, so it can be divided by 5. 23 ends in 3, so it cannot. The Multiplication Check Rule Quotient × Divisor = Dividend After you find an answer to a division problem, you can check if it's correct by using multiplication. If you solve 25 ÷ 5 = 5, you can check it by calculating 5 × 5, which equals 25. The Fact Family Connection If a × 5 = b, then b ÷ 5 = a Multiplication and division are opposites. If you know your 5s multiplication facts, you already know how to divide by 5! If you know 8 × 5 = 40, you automatically know that 40 ÷ 5 = 8....
