The Subtraction Sentence Structure Minuend - Subtrahend = Difference Always start with the total number. Then subtract the part you take away. The answer is what's left. The Order Matters! Start with the BIGGER number first. In subtraction, you must put the starting amount (the bigger number) first. You can't take away more than you have!
