Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Define and differentiate between mean, median, mode, and range. Calculate the mean of a given data set. Determine the median for both odd and even-sized data sets. Identify the mode(s) of a data set, including cases with no mode or multiple modes. Calculate the range of a data set to describe its spread. Analyze how an outlier can affect the mean, median, and range. Apply these measures to interpret simple real-world data sets. How does a video game company know if a new character is 'overpowered'? 🎮 They analyze data on player performance using the very tools you're about to learn! This tutorial will teach you how to calculate four key statistical measures: mean, median, mode, and range. These are foundational tools for summarizing dat...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample MeanThe arithmetic average of a set of numbers. It is found by summing all the values and dividing by the count of the values. For the data set {4, 6, 8}, the mean is (4 + 6 + 8) / 3 = 6. MedianThe middle value in an ordered set of numbers. If the set has an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle values. For the ordered data set {3, 5, 9}, the median is 5. For {3, 5, 9, 11}, the median is (5 + 9) / 2 = 7. ModeThe value that appears most frequently in a data set. A data set can have one mode, more than one mode, or no mode.In the data set {7, 8, 8, 9, 10}, the mode is 8. In {7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10}, the modes are 8 and 9. RangeThe difference between the highest and lowest values in a data set. It is a measure of the data's spread or variabili...

Core Formulas

Mean Formula Mean (\bar{x}) = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} x_i}{n} Use this to calculate the average. Sum all the values in the data set (represented by Σx_i) and divide by the total number of values (n). Median Position (Odd Set) Position = \frac{n+1}{2} For an ordered data set with an odd number of values (n), this formula gives the position of the median. For example, in a set of 9 values, the median is the (9+1)/2 = 5th value. Median Value (Even Set) Median = \frac{x_{n/2} + x_{(n/2)+1}}{2} For an ordered data set with an even number of values (n), the median is the average of the two middle values. These values are at positions n/2 and (n/2)+1. Range Formula Range = Maximum Value - Minimum Value Use this to measure the spread of the data. Subtract the smallest v...
