Introduction & Learning Objectives
Learning Objectives
Understand that length is a measurable attribute.
Choose a small object (a unit) to measure a larger object.
Measure the length of an object by lining up units end-to-end.
State a measurement with a number and the name of the unit (e.g., '5 blocks long').
Explain why there should be no gaps or overlaps when measuring.
Compare the lengths of two objects using the same measurement unit.
How many toy cars long is your desk? 🤔 Let's find out without a ruler!
Today, we will learn how to measure things. We will use fun objects like blocks and clips. This helps us see how long or short things are.
Real-World Applications
Seeing if your toy car will fit in its garage 🚗

Core Formulas
The 'No Gaps' Rule
Unit + Unit + Unit
When you line up your units, they must touch end-to-end. Don't leave any space between them!
The 'No Overlaps' Rule
Units must be side-by-side, not on top.
Your measuring units cannot be on top of each other. They need their own space.
The 'Start at the End' Rule
Start at 0
Always start measuring from the very beginning of the object you are measuring.
The 'Same Unit' Rule
Unit A + Unit A + Unit A
You must use the same kind of object to measure the whole thing. Don't mix big and small blocks!
