The Hook

The job you get after school probably won't be your last. In fact, it might not even be your fifth. Researchers estimate the average person will have about 12 different jobs in their lifetime. The Story

Sofia, 17, was a talented artist who needed money for a new laptop for her college portfolio. She got an offer for a steady part-time job at a local retail store. The pay was consistent, but it had nothing to do with her passion for graphic design. The same week, a family friend asked if she could design a logo for their new small business, offering a one-time payment that was equal to two weeks' pay at the retail job. Sofia weighed the guaranteed income of the store against the higher-paying, skill-building freelance gig. She decided to take the retail job for its stability but also accepted the logo project to complete in her free time. She realized her earning strategy didn't have to be all-or-nothing; she could combine a stable foundation with work that built her future.
