The Hook

The Story
Chloe, 17, was trying to tell her friend Mateo about the stress of a looming exam. As she spoke, Mateo kept scrolling on his phone, occasionally murmuring, “Yeah, that’s rough.” He insisted he was listening, but Chloe felt a growing sense of frustration. She felt dismissed, like she was less important than whatever was on his screen. The conversation fizzled out. The next day, her mom was telling her about a problem at work. Chloe caught herself doing the exact same thing—nodding along while checking notifications. She saw her mom’s expression falter and the phone suddenly felt rude in her hand. Chloe realized that saying “I’m listening” means nothing if your body is screaming “you’re not important.”
