The Hook

You hear it all the time: “It’s just a plant.” Or “It’s natural, so it’s safe.” But is that the whole story? Today’s marijuana can be 5 to 10 times stronger than the products that existed in the 1990s. When people say it was fine for their generation, they are talking about a completely different substance. It is time to separate the facts from the myths.

The Story

Tomoko, 13, kept hearing older students at her school talk about how marijuana was “totally safe because it’s a plant.” She was curious, but it didn't sound right. She decided to ask her older sister, who was studying biology in college. Her sister explained, “Poison ivy is a plant, too. ‘Natural’ doesn’t automatically mean ‘safe,’ especially for a brain that’s still growing like yours.” She showed Tomoko some research on how THC can affect memory and motivation in teens. Tomoko realized she didn't need to try it to form an opinion. She could look at the evidence and make her own choice. Her decision was hers, and she didn't have to argue about it.
