Job Interviews — Preparation and Common Mistakes
Tutorial Preview

The Hook
An interviewer often decides if they like a candidate in the first 90 seconds. That’s less time than it takes to watch a video on social media. It sounds scary, but it’s actually good news. It means that a few simple preparations can make a huge difference. You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be prepared. This lesson shows you how.

The Real Talk
An interview feels like a test where you don't know the questions. But that's not true. Most interviews, whether for a volunteer spot or a part-time job, ask the same few questions. Preparation is how you beat the nerves. The goal isn't to have perfect, memorized answers. It's to show you are respectful, interested, and reliable. Most of your success happens before you even walk in the door. Here are the most common mistakes to avoid:Arriving late or looking messy. Not knowing anything about the organization or company.Bad-mouthing a previous teacher, coach, or employer.Looking at your phone during the interview.Saying “I don’t have any questions” at the end.Knowing what not to do is half the battle. The other half is practicing the basics.

The Story
Lucas (14) wanted to be a volunteer at a summer camp. He figured it would be an easy conversation. He rolled up to the interview wearing pajama pants and a wrinkled shirt. The camp director asked, “So, why do you want to volunteer here?” Lucas shrugged. “I don’t know, seems fun I guess.” For every question, his answer was short and unenthusiastic. He didn’t get the position. The director was kind but direct. “You seemed unprepared, Lucas. That made me worry you’d be unprepared for the job, too.” Lucas was embarrassed, but he learned something important. Preparation sends a message before you even speak.
