The Hook
Did you know that most of what you say isn't said with your mouth? Researchers estimate that over half, and maybe as much as 93%, of all communication is nonverbal. That means your posture, your eyes, and even where you point your feet can speak louder than your words. Before you even say hello, people are already getting a message from you. The Story
Chloe, 14, was trying to tell her friend Santiago about a problem she was having with a teacher. It was a big deal to her, but as she talked, Santiago just kept scrolling on his phone. He’d say, “uh-huh, yeah, I’m listening,” but his eyes never left the screen. Chloe felt completely invisible and finally just gave up, saying, “never mind.” The next day, her younger brother was excitedly telling her about a new level he beat in a game. Chloe realized she was doing the exact same thing—scrolling through social media while he talked. She saw his face fall, and it hit her. She finally understood that listening isn't just something you do with your ears; it's something you show with your whole body.
